Connie's responsibilities include training and support
for extension agents in counties where muscadines are
commercially grown; providing assistance to growers in
site selection, vineyard management practices, and fruit
quality control; establishment of demonstration and
applied research trials; assistance in the organization
of annual meetings and workshops; and working closely
with growers and the NC Muscadine Grape Association to
advance the industry.

Bill Cline,
Researcher and Extension Specialist,
Plant Pathology, NCSU
Bill is responsible for investigating diseases of small
fruit crops at the Horticultural Crops Research Station,
Castle Hayne, and conducts research on muscadine grapes.
Current efforts include checking cultivars for disease
resistance, and establishing new test fields at Castle
Hayne for use in evaluating fungicides and cultural
practices to enhance disease control.

Wayne Mitchem, Researcher & Extension Associate –
Weed Management,

Wayne has Extension responsibilities for weed management
in tree fruit and vine crops in North Carolina, South
Carolina, and Georgia. His research interests include
herbicide screening for fruit crops and weed/crop
interactions as it relates to critical weed-free periods
for fruit.

Hannah Burrack, Assistant Professor

Dr. Burrack has Extension responsibilities for small
fruit crops, specialty crops, and tobacco. Her current
research focuses on mite management in strawberries;
thrips phenology, ecomonic impact, and management in
blackberries; and blueberry red ringspot virus (RRSV) in
blueberries.

Dr. Deperno’s Extension and Research interests include
population ecology and management of big game species
and predators; habitat use and selection of big game

prey, and sexual segregation and resource partitioning
in ungulates; animal damage and wildlife education.

Trevor Phister,

Dr. Phister’s research focuses on the application of
molecular biology and genomics techniques to the study
of the ecology, physiology, and interactions between the
yeasts and bacteria present in various environments
relevant to fermentation and food safety. He is the
Extension Enologist available to help winemakers across
the state produce quality wines.
